Before we arrive, here are a few steps you can take to help mitigate the loss from such an event:

  • Be cautious of any electrical hazards.
    • In the case of a serious water event, be sure to prevent mixing standing water and electricity. If you can safely reach your fuse box, turn off the main and all individual fuse connections.
  • Document the damage.
    • Before removing any water or making any repairs, fully document the damage for your insurer by taking photos or video. If you start removing water or making repairs prior to photographing the damage, you could potentially decrease the extent of your coverage.
  • Remove electronics, furniture, and movable items.
    • The faster you are able to remove items from the water-damaged area, the more likely you are to be able to save them.
  • Identify the category of water.
    • If possible, try and locate the source of the water and determine what risks might be present:
      • Category I: Liquid from a clean and sanitary source, with minimal risk, such as faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc. If left unresolved, category one can quickly degrade into category two.
      • Category II: Formerly known as grey water, this category of liquid can have a level of contaminants that may cause illness or discomfort is ingested. Sources include toilet overflow (without feces), dishwasher or washing machine overflow, and flush from sink drains.
      • Category III: Formerly known as black water, this is the most hazardous category, potentially causing severe illness or death if ingested. Sources include flooding from rivers or streams, sewage backup, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid that has begun to support microbial growth.

Once we arrive, our IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Certified technicians can begin to manage the more difficult water removal procedures. Using our training and expertise, we’ll begin to remove the water from the building and inspect potential damage and risks resulting from the water damage. If mold has begun to form, we will conduct testing and outline an appropriate process to remediate any mold growth and respective air quality issues as well.
